Introduction
Are you a business owner who speaks English as a second language? Improving your grammar can help attract more western, English-speaking customers and clients. While it may take some time for a non-native speaker to learn proper grammar, the investment is worth it.
And if you do speak English as a second language, you may be of the opinion that grammar mistakes are just going to happen and that’s normal and expected when English is not your first language. You’re correct, and I agree with you. However, in the realm of business (particularly when working with prospective clients and customers who speak English at a native level) the situation can be not so forgiving. For this reason, it’s best practice to ensure that the written material in your business is as close to native speaker levels as possible.
Here are three reasons why proper grammar matters in business:
Poor Grammar Can Change the Meaning of What You’re Trying to Say
Grammar is important because it helps to ensure that the meaning of what you are trying to communicate is clear. If you make a mistake in grammar, it can completely change the way your message is received.
For example, I once visited a website for a hospital. It read, “There are many socialists here that can help you.”
Since it was a hospital website, I’m assuming they meant “specialists.”
Even though this a simple mistake, it could be a dire one. The word “socialists” to western readers is a politically charged word. Although the services that a hospital offers has nothing to do with politics, you never know if prospective clients or customers were instantly turned off by the mere suggestion that someone with different political leanings than them were the only ones available to work with.
Poor Grammar Can Make You Appear Unprofessional
To clarify, using poor grammar does not make you unprofessional. Unprofessional actions make you unprofessional. However, unfortunately, when you use poor grammar, potential clients and customers can (and often will) make snap judgments about your professionalism, whether accurate or not.
To ensure that you come across as professional, it’s important to make sure that your grammar is as clean and correct as possible.
Bad Grammar Can Lead to Misunderstandings
Finally, proper grammar matters because it can help to avoid misunderstandings. Poor grammar can lead to miscommunication and confusion, which can have a negative impact on your business. To ensure that everyone is clear on what you’re trying to communicate, it’s important to take the time to use proper grammar.
Grammar provides clarity in your writing. This is because having a bunch of grammar errors is distracting for readers. You’re forcing them to expend extra mental energy trying to work out what it is you’re trying to say. When you have someone reading your business’s website, an email campaign you’ve sent out, or a sales page for one of your products, the last thing you want this potential buyer to do is waste mental energy on your sales copy and product descriptions. No, you want their eyes flying through your sales copy at lightning speed to increase the odds of them clicking that buy button!
I’ve always heard it said that a confused customer does not buy. Proper grammar is but one step you can take to make sure that potential clients and customers visiting your website or sales page are not confused about who you are and the products, services, and solutions you are offering them.
Conclusion
Improving your grammar can help you to attract English-speaking customers and clients. Proper grammar matters because it helps to ensure that the meaning of what you are communicating is as intended, it provides clarity in your writing, and it helps you avoid misunderstandings. While it may take some time and effort to learn proper grammar, the investment is worth it in the long run.
Being a business owner is no small task, and there’s a good chance that writing, editing, and proofreading your websites, email campaigns, articles, and sales pages just doesn’t seem to be a good use of your time.
