Don’t Forget to Proofread Your Social Media Content

March 13, 2023

Introduction

Writing effective social media content is critical for business owners who want to engage their customers and expand their reach. But if you’re not careful, your posts can easily become riddled with grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. To avoid this, it’s important to proofread all of your content before posting it on social media.

I’ve said before that the longer a piece of content is, the more likely there are to be errors. For example, a website headline that’s 14 words long can be confidently error free. But a blog article that’s 1,500 words long has more likelihood of a few pesky typos sneaking in and remaining after you post.

In general, social media content tends to be shorter. Tweets are often only a sentence or two, and Instagram captions are often only a paragraph.

This is great. As attention spans of social media users can tend to be quite low, you want something quick and punchy to grab them. But since it’s so short, you might think you don’t need to spend as much time revising what you post. That’s not the case.

The Importance of Quality Check Before Posting

No matter the length of your content, it’s important to take the time to proofread and check for errors before you hit publish. Social media is often a first impression for many potential customers. If your posts contain frequent spelling and grammar mistakes, customers may question your credibility as a business and think twice about engaging with you or buying from you.

On the other hand, if your content is properly proofread and error-free, it can help you build trust in addition to boosting engagement. People will be more likely to click on links and take action when they have confidence in your brand.

Scam Businesses on Social Media

Like it or not, social media can be a cesspool of scam businesses. Why? Because scams work by getting a constant stream of new victims, and social media is usually the most effective way to get as many eyeballs on content as possible.

You don’t want your business to be mistaken for a scam business. And what’s a hallmark of a scam business? Very poorly written posts and captions. You want to do everything you can to separate yourself from these types of businesses.

That’s why it’s important to make sure that your social media content is well proofread. A few spelling and grammar mistakes can be enough for a potential customer to write you off—and this could have catastrophic repercussions for your business.

I wrote more about this here: Business Lessons From a Nigerian Prince.

Be Prepared to Go Viral

It’s generally said that you shouldn’t try very hard to “go viral” (because you can’t really control that) but you should be prepared for it when it possibly does happen to you.

What happens when something you post on social media hits that algorithmic juice just right and the social media platform sends your business content out to millions of people? Or if a major influencer in your industry shares your post to their massive audience?

All of a sudden and overnight, your business platform (other social media channels, website, etc.) will receive a ton of traffic. That’s an awesome opportunity! Some businesses got their first breakthrough from something on social media that went viral.

But you want to be prepared for such an opportunity. Meaning, you want to make a good impression on all these newcomers. You don’t want to make your business look bad because you skimped on proofreading and published something incorrectly. Like the Nigerian Prince mentioned above, you might be mistaken for a scam.

Conclusion

Proofreading is essential no matter what kind of content you’re creating or posting on social media. It’s far too easy to make mistakes that could turn potential customers away and damage your reputation. Often, it doesn’t take too many mistakes for someone to write your business off entirely. A few extra minutes proofreading can ensure that all of your efforts don’t go to waste and that your content is well received.
