Happy New Year!
If you’re a business owner, the time period between January 2nd and May 31st is the best time of year for you.
Why is that? Let’s explore.
For businesses, the timeframe of January 2nd through May 31st can be a great opportunity to focus on expanding operations, increasing profits, and setting themselves up for success throughout the remainder of the year. This season is ideal since there are no major holidays that your customers and potential clients and customers need to work around. The only exception might be Spring Break, but this generally applies to students and college kids—likely not the primary target market for your product or service.
Think about it. When there are no major holidays for a long period in a row, that decreases the odds that your emails will be met with an “out of office” auto responder and increases the chance that you can actually get someone on the phone.
In addition to this, most business people dialed back their focus and intensity in November and December of the preceding year. You likely have, too—everyone needs a break, after all. And as you know, when it comes to highly motivated and ambitious business people, they often come back from prolonged breaks and holidays with new momentum and fire and ready to make moves.
Another popular component of the holidays at the end of the previous calendar year is that many people take some time to reflect about the past twelve months. They analyze what worked for them, what didn’t, and contemplate what direction they want to go next. For many business people, that includes ideas for new partnerships they want to develop and new products and services they want to invest in. Perhaps your business offers these products and services that these folks have already decided to seek out. If so, you want to make sure you are front and center with your best foot forward when they begin their search.
When you think about it, productivity and motivation often starts slowing down after May 31st. Once June rolls around, people start to focus on summer vacations, the Fourth of July (in the US), and summer activities. People who have kids might have them home for the summer months as well, leading to some extra distractions. During this part of the year, you might have to wait longer for an email or phone call to be returned, or you might have to wait for a client or customer to return from a two-week vacation before you can make progress with their account.
If you’re outside of the US, then there’s something else to think about when it comes to your potential clients and customers who are US-based: the US celebrates Thanksgiving at the end of November, so that month still has a “holiday” vibe to it. This is exacerbated more and more with each passing year as Christmas seems to “expand” well into November (and sometimes even October) since the department stores start rolling out their Christmas stuff earlier and earlier to capitalize. On a subconscious level, seeing Christmas stuff on the store shelves (even in early November) can still put people into a holiday mode, even though it’s not quite time to start taking time off.
With all of this in mind, it’s easy to see how the first five months of the year are your best time to set yourself up for the rest of the year.
So what should you do to prepare for this time period?
A lot, but one of the key things is to make sure that your business is putting its best foot forward.
