3 MORE Ways to Overcome Creative Blocks

May 15, 2023

Overcoming creative blocks can seem like a Herculean task, but with the right strategies it’s possible to make progress and reclaim control of your work.

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article called 3 Ways to Overcome Creative Blocks. In this post, we’ll look at three MORE powerful methods for pushing past walls in creativity—no matter what industry you’re working in or how long you’ve hit a roadblock.

Set Realistic Goals

This one’s quite personal for me.

I’ve long struggled with setting realistic goals for myself. I always think I’m Superman and try to take on far more than I can reasonably get done in a day, or in a week, or in a month.

One of the primary reasons people experience creative blocks is due to unrealistic expectations. Setting goals that are too high can lead to frustration and a lack of motivation when those goals aren’t met. To combat this, try breaking your tasks down into smaller, achievable milestones. This can help you maintain a steady pace, reduce stress, and give you a sense of accomplishment as you progress.

I love breaking down goals into much smaller—sometimes very tiny—steps. Why? Because I love that feeling of checking off those boxes on my to-do list one by one; it really gives me a sense of forward momentum.

Here are some tips to help you set realistic goals:

  • Write down your long-term goals and identify the smaller steps needed to achieve them.
  • Prioritize your tasks based on importance and deadline (if there is one; if not, it might help to set a self-imposed deadline).
  • Allocate time for each task, ensuring that you don’t overestimate your abilities.
  • Track your progress and adjust your goals as needed.

By setting realistic goals, you can reduce the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed and get closer to achieving your desired outcomes.

Exercise Regularly

I can’t tell you how many of my ideas came to me when I was at the gym or going for a long walk. Sometimes, the perfect flash of insight or the solution to a problem comes to me mid-set! There have even been times I’ve abandoned sets in the middle so that I could hurry up and write down the idea I’ve just had—because believe me, there have been times when I waited to finish the set and the great idea was gone just as quickly as it came.

Engaging in regular physical activity has numerous benefits, including improving mental clarity and boosting creativity. Exercise can help increase blood flow to the brain, promoting the growth of new neurons and improving cognitive function. This, in turn, can help you overcome creative blocks by providing you with fresh perspectives and increased mental energy.

Here are some simple ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine:

  • Take a short walk during your lunch break.
  • Join a local gym or fitness class.
  • Practice yoga or meditation.
  • Participate in team sports or outdoor activities with friends or colleagues.

Remember, it’s not always about the intensity of the exercise, but rather the consistency. Regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy work-life balance and enhance your overall well-being.

Experiment With Different Types of Media

If you find yourself stuck in a creative rut, consider experimenting with different types of media. This can help break the monotony of your routine and inspire you to think outside the box. For example, bloggers can try creating videos. Video lovers can try out the podcast format.

This also works great outside of content marketing. You can try sketching or painting to stimulate your creativity. If you’re a designer, maybe try tackling a short story or poem.

Here are some suggestions for experimenting with different types of media:

  • Attend workshops or classes in various creative fields.
  • Collaborate with other creatives to gain new insights and perspectives.
  • Explore new software or tools to expand your skillset.
  • Set aside time each week to engage in a new creative activity.

By diversifying your creative outlets, you can develop new skills, gain fresh perspectives, and overcome creative blocks with ease.

Conclusion

Overcoming creative blocks can be challenging, but with the right strategies, it’s possible to break through them and reignite your passion for your work. By setting realistic goals, exercising regularly, and experimenting with different types of media, you can boost your creativity and push through any barriers that may be hindering your progress. Remember, the key is to remain persistent, patient, and open to new experiences.
