Introduction
You don’t often hear business owners being described as “creative.” That term is usually reserved for artists such as painters, writers, and musicians. But being creative isn’t just for artists. Business owners need to be creative too, because creativity plays a big role in problem-solving and coming up with new ideas that have the potential to make them more successful.
One key way that business owners are creative is when it comes time to create content for their business—often in the form of blog articles, videos, email campaigns, and social media posts. But sometimes, it’s hard to come up with new ideas, and that can lead to creative blocks.
What Is a Creative Block?
A creative block is when you feel like you have nothing left in the tank when it comes to coming up with new ideas or content. It can be frustrating and overwhelming because everything you come up with just doesn’t feel right, or maybe the ideas aren’t coming at all.
That’s why it’s important to know how to overcome creative blocks. Here are some tips that can help you get back on track and get those creative juices flowing again.
Take a Break
Honestly this is probably the number one thing you can do to break through a creative block. Unfortunately, it isn’t the most obvious, because as a business owner it often feels like the least productive thing you could do is take a break.
But it can actually massively help you. Taking a break from whatever project you’re trying to finish gives your brain time to rest and rejuvenate, which often leads to new and better ideas. And when you focus on something else for a little while, your subconscious mind is not ceasing to work on the problem of your content and what to create next or which direction to take it. No, it’s actually working overtime in the background, whether you realize it or not.
You’re probably very familiar with the “ah-ha!” moment—that moment when you’ve been thinking about a problem for hours, days, weeks, or months and suddenly an answer appears out of nowhere. That’s your mind working in the background to come up with solutions.
So don’t be afraid to give yourself permission to take a break. Step away from your desk (or computer) and do something else for a while. Whether it’s going for a walk, taking a nap, reading a book, or playing an instrument—anything that allows your mind to relax and temporarily get away from what you’re working on.
Talk It Out With Someone
Another great way to get the creative juices flowing again is by talking it out with someone else. It doesn’t have to be someone who knows a lot about content or your project—just someone you can bounce ideas off of and get an outside perspective.
Having another person to talk to can help you work through the problem that’s causing the creative block in the first place. Oftentimes we become so stuck on one point or angle of an idea that we can’t see any other way out. But when you talk to someone else, they may point out something that you hadn’t considered before and suddenly the creative block is gone!
By the way, one of the best people in which to do this with is a proofreader or editor. If you’re writing a piece of content for your business website, then a proofreader will be able to view your sticking point from an outsider’s vantage point, giving you an objective birds-eye view of your project that you might’ve lost since you’ve spent so much time on it.
Change Your Environment
Sometimes it doesn’t matter how much of a break you take, you just can’t seem to snap out of it. In this case, it might be time to change your environment.
This could mean setting up shop in a new place or office space, or just rearranging the furniture in the room you’re already working in. Any kind of physical change can help to stimulate your brain and get those creative juices flowing again.
Conclusion
Creative blocks are a common problem that most of us have to face at one time or another. But with the right approach, you can overcome them and get back on track with your content creation project. Just remember to take breaks, talk it out with someone else, and change your environment if need be. With these tips, you should be able to get back on track in no time.
